Inclusion in Squirrel Class
In Squirrel Class, we believe that every child should feel that they belong, can participate and can succeed. As a mixed Year 1 and Year 2 class, we recognise that children develop at different rates and may need different approaches, resources or levels of support to help them thrive. We maintain high expectations for all children while adapting teaching carefully so that everyone can access our shared learning.
Our classroom is practical, visual and active. We use modelling, visual prompts, opportunities for talk and rehearsal, carefully chosen resources and supportive scaffolds to help children build confidence. Children may demonstrate their understanding in different ways, including through discussion, drawing, practical activities and writing. Support is adapted as children become more confident, encouraging them to develop independence, resilience and pride in what they can achieve.
Inclusion also extends beyond the classroom. Welly Wednesday, Forest School and our termly visits to Stelling Lodge Farm provide valuable opportunities for children to learn through first-hand experiences, develop relationships, take appropriate risks and experience success in different ways. Our local community and outdoor environment are an important part of our curriculum and give every child opportunities to discover and celebrate their individual strengths.
Above all, we know our Squirrels as individuals and want to see them shine. We celebrate what makes each child unique, build on their interests and strengths and provide support where it is needed. Through a nurturing, respectful and ambitious environment, we aim for every child to feel valued, included and confident that they are an important part of our Squirrel Class community.
